Bible Study Starting September 9th
I will be teaching an adult Bible study on Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm at Hamilton First Church of the Nazarene.
We will be going through the book of Revelation. The framework and push behind this study will be that the book of Revelation is a pastoral document, written to a church that was suffering and needed comforting and hope, and so their pastor, John writes this fantastical and mystical letter to help them on their journey.
We will also look at modern “proof-texting” of the prophecy in Revelation, such as:
*Are Gog and Magog really China and Russia? Iran?
*Is 666 really the mark of the beast? (how about 616?)
*What do we do with the 144,000?
*And what about the throne of judgement?
*Why do “prophets” today think they know how to interpret verses in Revelation to correspond to modern events and inventions (helicopters? the Iraq War? etc)
I’m going to encourage those who come to the study to not be afraid of the book of Revelation. That at it’s core is a message of hope. And if a person can read Narnia, Perelandra (the Space Trilogy), Lord of the Rings, Lilith, or even Alice in Wonderland, and get lost in the magic and language of fantasy literature then they can read the book of Revelation.

Amanda — You should see all the books I’m reading for this Bible study! It’s insane! I bought 5 commentaries from Christianbook, plus what I already have!
Bonnie — Ya just a little bit of Olu influence. I have a copy of his dissertation. It is very insightful and is already helping in this study.
Had the first study last Tuesday it went pretty well. They’re even learning a Greek word or two every week.
